How can I get my hands on this DVD? I love drummers that posses great technique, but after listening to 5 minutes of 32nd note and 16th note triplet blowing with an occasional cowbell being hit, I thought to myself, ok, he can get around the kit nicely, but where's the music?

One aspect of the solo Keith Carlock video I really enjoyed is he was so musical in his approach, as if there was a band there.
I'm not comparing the two drummers, just the approaches. I would love to hear Palmer play a groove and song. Drumming in my humble opinion needs to hit you in your soul. This left me saying, "hmmm, that's interesting....what's he doing there?" It was difficult to listen to the whole piece from a musical stand point.
Again, I'm someone would much rather listen to Charley Drayton play a groove for an hour than hear Thomas Lang or Virgil Donati solo. It may just be that my taste's are different and I'm impressed by other aspects of our great instrument. I'm not trying to take anything away from Mr. Palmer as he clearly has a level of technical mastery on the instrument.
I love music and aesthetic of groove and feel.
How can I hear this tune you speak of Randy?

I hear you Smitty. I checked out his site, and I think the kid's on his way. He has a great foundation, and I got great vibes from the inspiration section of his site.
I can relate to what you said about the solo. I'd like to hear something musical as well. The reality is this kid plays his ass off. I thought he had tons of Lang in his approach, and then I read that he studies with him.
I hope Louie leaves Lang, and get's deep into that Ferrone thing he mentioned on his site. If his groove thing is as strong as his technique, he'll outwork Lang in Europe. I just can't deal with Lang's pocket, or lack there of. Perfection and wild chops don't lead to great feeling music. Most of the musicians in the states that have toured with Lang in different European pop bands say that his feel is terrible, but he nails the click bigtime, therefor gets called to do the tours. Wonder why he didn't get the big gigs when he lived in LA?? Too many monsters in the states. Groove monsters.
But from what I read on his site, LP knows this. LOOKOUT!

LP, great chops man. I'm always amazed at how some kids have such well developed technique at such a young age. For most of us mortals it takes a few decades.

i hear you guys. its just taken ages to get some clips with music together. the dvd was made in feb but due to all sorts of things its taken ages to edit but i should be receiving the internet vids today....i'll try to put some different styles up on the site asap.

also getting decent playalong stuff is hard. i resisted putting the old weckl stuff up, or even playing it. i used some new tracks from bernie-g's album and a few others from here and there. but still im on the lookout of great playalong stuff for practice and performing.

on that subject, the playalongs in all 3 drum essentials books by peter erskine are EXCELLENT!! no clicks, lots of styles and GREAT music. thanks peter!

Louie, there's something that I'm wondering.

Of Course, i haven't seen your DVD yet, but if I was blessed beeing able to do a promo-dvd, the last thing I would do was to put myself into a situation with a play-along track. If I were a producer, band-leader, whatever, I would like to see how you communicate musical ideas with other people, and how you interact and interpret their musical impulses.

A drummer with your callibur would have people standing in line wanting to play with you on that DVD.

Don't take this in a negative way, it's just feedback or an idea for an evt. sequel DVD project.

I'm looking forward into checking the DVD out still though!

Keep us informed on how and when this little beast is gonna be avaiable for us Danes here, and I'll spread the word here [img]cool.gif[/img]

i would have loved to do it with a band - but as usual money was an issue and rehearsal time, good enough musicians (and reliable enough!!) and for this project it was just easier. to get all these styles down with a band u'd need serious muso's and writing time. just not practical.

the dvd is only the 1st edition really. tester for all involved, came out looking very professional, but cant wait to do another. just a learning curve. i just think a dvd is so much better than a cd esp seeing as drumming is so visual and a lot of the recipients will be non-drummers!

dazzler - well im gigging in various function bands etc not many public gigs really and that was the purpose of the dvd, to get more gigs! i need to get down to some of the 606 jams etc.
